Living Hygge

The Little Book of Hygge

With the last official month of winter upon us, I wanted to share some tips on living hygge (pronounced “HOO-gah”). Hygge is a Danish lifestyle that has everyone cozying up, and focusing on the warm, fuzzies in life.

While hygge, does not directly translate to anything in English, most people describe it as more of a feeling than an actual definition. Hygge is being with close family and friends, snuggling up with your favor book on a gloomy day, or even cooking a homemade meal. It is all over togetherness, happiness and warmth.

After traveling to Denmark this past summer, I have sort of become obsessed with the lifestyle and have started to read up on it and try to incorporate it into my life. Here are some ways that everyone can be a little more hyggeligt…

1. Light some candles

A very important part of hygge is lighting! Sitting in the soft, golden light of candles is where a great feeling of warmth can come from. So, come home, unwind, light some candles and let your daily stresses melt away.

2. Cook and bake

Filling your home with the smell of a delicious roast or some homemade cookies couldn’t be more hygge! This is a part of the Danish lifestyle that I would really like to work on. Baking and cooking can be so much fun, but I never seem to find the time, or I get lazy with shopping for ingredients. But filling your home with the smells of a great recipe is a great way to feel the warmth of home.

3. Invite your friends!

Having a feeling of togetherness is another major component to the Danish lifestyle. While hygge can be alone time, sharing and laughing with friends and family is always a great way to get through the long winter nights.

4. Turn off the electronics and be in the moment

If there is one thing that should not be apart of hygge, it’s electronics. Hygge is about being in the moment and being with the people you love, or even enjoying a little “you” time. So put the phone down, and turn off the Netflix. It might seem hard at first, but trust me, you’ll thank me eventually.

5. Surround yourself with the things you love

Overall, hygge is about happiness, so surround yourself with any and all things that make you happy! Why not, right?! If you love books, pictures, flowers, anything, keep them close to you and enjoy them. Do what makes you happy and do it often.
